AA in brief: Hapeville Charter-Douglass nominated for GOW

For the first time this season, there is no change to the Class AA rankings from the previous week. That means the Brooks County Trojans hold on to their spot at No. 10 after losing to AAAAA’s unranked Thomas County Central to fall to 3-2.

As noted in the Friday night recap, the other nine ranked teams took care of business in double-digit fashion.

  • Top-ranked Hapeville Charter's showdown with 6-AA rival Douglass has been nominated by WSB's Sports Zone as Game of the Week. You can vote here.
  • Thomasville freshman sensation Chad Moscoe has veen invited to play in the Football Univeristy All American Bowl on Dec. 19 in Naples, Fla. The exhibition features 70 of the top football players from the class of 2022.
  • Moscoe's teammate, Karey Lee, was invited to play in the Elite Raw Talent All-American Bowl, Dec. 28 in Atlanta.
  • The Rockmart Yellow Jackets are off to a 5-0 start —including 2-0 in 7-AA — and a dominant offensive line is a big reason why. In their 48-0 win over Dade County on Friday, they paved the way for 306 rushing yards and 112 passing.
  • WTXL has highlights from Brooks County's game against  Thomas County Central.
  • With their 14-7 win over Armuchee, the Model Blue Devils (2-3) moved to 2-0 in 7-AA play for the second time in three seasons. In 2016 they started 2-0 in league play, finished 4-3 and reached the AA playoffs. Jonathan Blaylock has the writeup from the game for the Rome News-Tribune.
  • Former Hapeville Charter Hornets standout Jaquez Ezzard (class of 2016) was featured on SportsCenter for his reception as a member of Howard.
  • Following their 40-20 win over Therrell, the Douglass Astros are 5-0 for the first time since 2005. Here's another hype video.
  • In the Astros' win, Juan Powell surpassed former Tennessee and NFL standout Jamal Lewis for most rushing yards in program history.
  • Morgan Lee of AccessWDUN takes a look at the big week ahead in 8-AA.
  • Speaking of 8-AA, the Putnam County War Eagles could unleash their secret special teams weapons on Friday against Monticello.
  • The Pepperell Dragons (3-2) beat Coosa 38-14 to move to 2-0 in 7-AA. NwGA has a couple highlights.
  • Screven County is 3-2, 2-1 in 4-AA following its 34-12 win over Laney on Friday.
  • Callaway football announcer Andrew Caraway points out that the Cavaliers (4-1) have already posted three shutouts in five games, and have scored five defensive touchdowns in the same span. They beat Temple 40-0 on Friday.
  • The Banks County Leopards are 3-2 and 2-0 in 8-AA after their 31-7 win over Oglethorpe County in which they led 21-0 at halftime. Jeff Hart of accessWDUN has the game story.
  • Here are some highlights from Harlem's 38-28 loss to Jefferson County. The Bulldogs are 3-2, 2-1 in 4-AA and seeking a second consecutive trip to the playoffs after three straight losing seasons.
  • Harlem punter Kevin Jones was honored at halftime.
  • Jeff Davis' pursuit of 300 program wins was put on hold for another week after the Bacon County Red Raiders beat the Yellow Jackets 24-17 for their first win of the season (1-4, 1-0 2-AA). It was the season's first loss for Jeff Davis (4-1, 0-1), who failed to fry bacon.
  • Though Dublin exited the rankings last week following a loss to Brooks County, they rebounded to let it be known they're still contenders, beating East Laurens 63-0 to move to 4-1, 1-0 in 3-AA.
  • Union County moved to 5-0 with a 55-0 win over Putnam County. Todd Forrest of NGAnews posted a game thread to Twitter.

  • In Vidalia's 54-8 win over Bryan County, Chris Gay rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns and James Outler had 119 all-purpose yards with two scores.
  • The Hephzibah Rebels are eyeing their first playoff appearance since 2014, beating Glenn Hills 27-8 to move to 4-1 and 3-0 in 4-AA.
  • The Heard County Braves won their region opener 28-12 over Spencer to move to 3-2 and 1-0 in 5-AA. They've won two in a row after losing two straight, which knocked them from the rankings after the started the year No. 2.
  • The Toombs County Bulldogs twice rallied before beating Metter 20-17 in overtime, as ToombsNow writes. The Bulldogs are 3-2 and 1-0 in 2-AA after going 10-2 last season.
  • The Elbert County Blue Devils moved to 4-1, 2-0 in 8-AA with their 47-7 win over Social Circle. Tyler William has the game story for The Walton Tribune.
  • WTXL has highlights from Thomasville's 49-20 win over Cook.
  • Hapeville Charter captain Malik Fleming — committed to East Carolina — turned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in the Hornets' game against McNair. Here's another special teams score off a punt deflected and returned for a touchdown. The Hornets won 63-0 to move to 4-0, 2-0 in 6-AA.
  • Union County coach Brian Allison was feeling sentimental before the Panthers' game on Friday after being reminded of the 2001 season, in which the Panthers finished 9-2. Nine wins is the most in program history, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association, and the Panthers have matched that total five times, most recently in 2015, when they finished 9-2 for a second straight season. Allison coached the Panthers from 1997-2001, then returned in 2008 and has been there ever since.
