Boys basketball rankings: Tucker, Therrell remain No. 1 despite losses

No. 1 teams Tucker and Therrell lost boys basketball games last week, but each held its top ranking in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll.

Tucker, the No. 1 team in Class AAAAAA, lost to LaFayette, an undefeated Alabama team, on the M.L. King Jr. Holiday, then needed overtime to defeat Morrow 69-68 the next day. That was Tucker’s fifth game in six days, a schedule gauntlet caused partly by weather-related makeups. Tucker is 21-3.

In AA, defending state champion Therrell lost to Region 6 city rival Douglass 55-52 Friday night. Therrell (17-6, 11-1) remains in first place ahead of Douglass (19-4, 10-2), which moved up four spots to No. 4 in the rankings.

Swainsboro (20-2) remained at No. 2. Swainsboro and Therrell each have one loss in AA, both to teams they also have beaten. In Swainsboro’s case, that’s No. 3 Jeff Davis.

This is the final week of the regular season before region tournaments. The state tournament begins Feb. 14.
