AA blog: Week 11 rankings rundown

Every Sunday, the AJC releases its top 10 polls for the boys and girls. This week marks the final of the regular season before the region tournaments start, which determine the seeding for the state playoffs.

Boys

1. Woodville-Tompkins (23-0)

Region record: 12-0 in Region 2 (first place)

Notes: The Wolverines are two wins away from a 25-0 regular season, with Bryan County (0-21, 0-12) and Jeff Davis (15-8, 7-5)  standing in the way of that. They went 2-0 last week, beating Metter (71-60) and Toombs County (81-30).

2. Therrell (18-5)

Region record: 12-0 in Region 6 (first place)

Notes: Last week, the Panthers racked up wins over A-Private's No. 3  Eagle's Landing Christian (64-53), Douglass (73-54) and Hapeville Charter (62-55). They play Hapeville Charter (10-13, 6-6) again and close the regular season against No. 3 South Atlanta (18-4, 11-1) in a game that will likely decide the No. 1 seed for next week's 6-AA tournament.

3. South Atlanta (18-4)

Region record: 11-1 in Region 6 (second place)

Notes: Last week the Hornets beat AAAAAAA's Campbell (63-52) and Washington (94-36). They close the regular season against Douglass (11-7, 8-4) and No. 2 Therrell (18-5, 12-0).

4. Vidalia (20-3)

Region record: 9-3 in Region 2 (second place)

Notes: The Indians beat Jeff Davis (54-48) and Bryan County (90-35) last week and close out with Toombs County (10-10, 4-8) and Metter (16-6, 7-5).

5. Glenn Hills (20-3)

Region record: 13-1 in Region 4 (first place)

Notes:The Spartans topped Westside-Augusta (73-63) and Josey (73-58) last week. They'll face Laney (15-8, 10-4) and Hephzibah (11-8, 9-4) this week.

6. Butler (16-3)

Region record: 10-3 in Region 4 (second place)

Notes:The Bulldogs beat Screven County (65-17) and Jefferson County (71-50) last week and face Josey (10-10, 7-6) and Hephzibah (11-8, 9-4) this week.

7. Northeast-Macon (18-4)

Region record: 9-1 in Region 3 (first place tie)

Notes: The Raiders went 1-1 last week, beating Central-Phenix City (Ala.) 54-52 in a holiday tournament in Albany and losing to Dublin 82-80. They play No. 8 Washington County (17-5, 9-1) in what will likely determine the No. 1 seed in next week's region tournament, and East Laurens (3-17, 2-8). They played Washington County on Jan. 5 and won 62-61, with Darius Dunn scoring 28 points and Camrone Cherry adding 25.

8. Washington County (17-5)

Region record: 9-1 in Region 3 (first place tie)

Notes: The Golden Hawks went 3-0 last week, beating Dodge County (61-49), Southwest-Macon (55-34) and A-Public's No. 2 Hancock Central (62-60 in overtime). After the game against Northeast-Macon (18-4, 9-1), they close with Dublin (10-10, 7-4). In the Northeast game, the Golden Hawks were led by Jamarius Dixon (15 points), Jawan Dukes (13) and Jarden Maze (10).

9. Elbert County (20-3)

Region record: 11-1 in Region 8 (first place)

Notes: Barring a collapse this week against Putnam County (6-16, 4-8) and Monticello (4-19, 3-9), the Blue Devils likely clinched the top seed for the 8-AA tournament by beating second-place Banks County, 63-51, last week, along with Rabun County (70-48) and Social Circle (56-41).

10. Spencer (19-3) 

Region record: 10-0 in Region 5 (first place)

Notes: The Green Wave replace Swainsboro at the 10-spot and are riding an 11-game win streak, including going 3-0 last week against Callaway (110-74), Bremen (58-45) and Jordan (87-50). They play three more this week against Lamar County (8-13, 5-5), Heard County (7-12, 5-5) and Central-Phenix City (Ala.), which holds a record of 19-6.

Girls

1. Dodge County (21-1)

Region record: 11-0 in Region 3 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Indians beat Washington County (74-48), East Laurens (78-69) and A-Public's Hawkinsville (64-43) last week. They close the season against A-Public's No. 4 Wheeler County and Bleckley County (5-18, 1-9). The Lady Indians beat Bleckley County 62-52 on Dec. 4.

2. Fitzgerald (21-0)

Region record: 6-0 in Region 1 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Purple Hurricane beat AAAAA's Ware County (83-71) and Early County (75-65) last week and face Berrien (9-13, 1-5) and Thomasville (16-7, 3-3) this week.

3. Bryan County (22-0)

Region record: 14-0 in Region 2 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Redskins edged No. 6 Swainsboro 66-63 and beat Vidalia 66-43 last week. They play three times this week, including against Woodville-Tompkins, Bacon County and AAA's Southeast Bulloch (7-13).

4. Rabun County (21-1)

Region record: 12-0 in Region 8 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Wildcats went 3-0 against Elbert County (57-45), Union County (64-47) and Monticello (61-59). On Monday, they beat Social Circle 81-17 and close out the season on Friday against Putnam County (16-6, 9-3).

5. Laney (21-2)

Region record: 14-0 in Region 4 (first place)

Notes: Last week the Lady Wildcats lost to AAAAAA's Grovetown 60-55 and rebounded to beat Hephzibah (80-24) and Westside-Augusta (90-25). They play Glenn Hills (0-16, 0-13) and Harlem (10-9, 6-7) this week.

6. Swainsboro (19-3)

Region record: 12-2 in Region 2 (second place)

Notes: The Lady Tigers played four games in five days last week, losing to No. 3 Bryan County (66-63), then beating St. Vincent's (64-30), Jeff Davis (48-27) and Dublin (58-31). They play Metter (8-14, 4-10) and Toombs County (9-10, 5-9) this week.

7. Early County (19-3)

Region record: 5-2 in Region 1 (second place)

Notes: The Lady Bobcats went 2-1 last week, beating Brooks County (55-15) and Thomasville (73-47) before losing 75-65 to No. 2 Fitzgerald. They play A-Public's Terrell County, Berrien (9-13, 1-5) and A-Public's Miller County this week. Early County's best player, Makayla Timpson, was profiled in the AJC on Tuesday.

8. Banks County (19-4)

Region record: 9-3 in Region 8 (second place)

Notes: Last week the Lady Leopards beat Monticello (40-36), Elbert County (50-41) and Oglethorpe County (62-19). This week they play Union County (12-10, 5-7) and Social Circle (5-13, 0-10).

9. Douglass (18-5)

Region record: 12-0 in Region 6 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Astros beat Therrell 74-46 in their only game last week, and they play South Atlanta and McNair this week.

10. Southwest-Macon (16-4)

Region record: 7-3 in Region 3 (second place)

Notes: The Lady Patriots replace Washington County in the Rankings after going 3-0 last week with wins over Dublin (52-27), then-No. 8 Washington County (54-44) and AAA's Central-Macon (64-41). They play East Laurens (14-7, 6-4) and Bleckley County (5-18, 1-9) this week.
