Clinton Lynch, a last-minute addition to Georgia Tech's signing class, will begin his freshman season with one unusual asset – having played for a former Tech football player.
Lynch played wide receiver at Norcross High, where his position coach was Jeremy Muyres, a four-year starter at safety for the Yellow Jackets 1999-2002 and a three-time All-ACC selection. He also oversees the Blue Devils’ weight program.
“He helped me out a lot, especially in the weight room, just getting stronger, getting faster, getting me bigger,” Lynch said of Muyres. “I really felt like it was a college weight-room program. He wanted to really push you, push you to your limit and make you a better football player.”
Muyres also spoke on behalf of Lynch with defensive coordinator Ted Roof, who recruits Gwinnett County and was Muyres’ defensive coordinator for three seasons.
“He just wanted me to just excel anywhere I went,” Lynch said of Muyres. “It doesn’t matter what school it was; it just happened to be Georgia Tech.”
At Norcross, Lynch helped lead the Blue Devils to back-to-back Class 6A state titles, catching 47 passes for 912 yards last season. Muyres called him a sleeper prospect, saying only his size (6-foot-0, 185 pounds) kept him from getting more offers. Lynch had been committed to Georgia State before receiving Tech's offer the day before national signing day.
“He’s everything you want as a player; he’s fast, he’s quick, he’s reliable,” Muyres said recently. “There won’t be anybody that’s going to outwork that kid. He does everything you ask him to do. You ask him to run through a wall, he’ll do it.”
On signing day, coach Paul Johnson said that Lynch would start off at A-back. He is listed at wide receiver on the official roster, however. With considerable depth at A-back – high school teammate and fellow incoming freshman Myles Autry is also an A-back – wide receiver might be more favorable, but there’s a slew of younger players at that position, as well.
He’ll wear No. 49, previously worn by walk-on defensive back Jerredith Jiles.
“I’m ready to work,” Lynch said. “I’m just trying to contribute any way I can, trying to get (the team) to an ACC championship, possibly a national championship. I’m here to work.”
