The Georgia Tech baseball team qualified for pool play at the ACC tournament with a 5-3 win over Wake Forest Tuesday in Greensboro, N.C.
The Yellow Jackets will start with top-seeded Miami at 3 p.m. Wednesday, then No. 4 Duke Thursday at 3 and No. 5 Clemson Friday at 3 p.m. All games will be carried on regional sports networks (Fox Sports South in Atlanta) and ESPN3.
Center fielder Daniel Spingola was instrumental as he went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, a run scored and two RBI. Tech scored all five of its runs with two out and none on in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Ryan Peurifoy and Brandon Gold both singled, then Mitch Earnest doubled for a 1-0 lead.
Spingola and Mott Hyde hit back-to-back triples to push the lead to 4-0 and then Matt Gonzalez completed the scoring with an infield single.
Sam Clay’s three innings of scoreless relief and strong defense – two double plays to give Tech 66 for the season – and a pair of difficult catches by Gonzalez in left field in the ninth helped the lead stand up.
