John Clayton gives Falcons a C-plus in free agency

Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn, right, and general manager Thomas Dimitroff, left, enter the room for a news conference held by the NFL football team, Monday, Dec. 30, 2019, in Flowery Branch, Ga. Quinn and Dimitroff were in the hot seat earlier this season after Atlanta started the season at 1–7, but the Falcons have gone 5–2 and owner Arthur Blank made the decision to retain both Quinn and Dimitroff, pointing to the second-half turnaround as the main reason for the decision.

Longtime NFL writer and former ESPN personality John Clayton, who currently writes a NFL column for The Washington Post, was not too impressed with the Falcons’ moves in free agency.

Clayton gave the Falcons a C-plus for their moves, which was his third lowest score in the NFC South. Carolina received a C, while New Orleans had a B and Tampa Bay, which landed Tom Brady, received an A-minus.

Here’s what Clayton had to say about the Falcons:

“Although it cost a second-round pick to land (Hayden) Hurst to replace Hooper, the Falcons might have gotten a little better at defensive end with (Dante) Fowler replacing (Vic) Beasley. The (Devonta) Freeman-(Todd) Gurley swap might be even, but the Falcons still have needs at linebacker and cornerback.
