A flood of holiday travelers combined with road construction is leading to congested airport roads and crowds at Hartsfield-Jackson International.

Security lines were moving quickly at the world's busiest airport, but cars backed up on the roadways surrounding the domestic terminal at the Atlanta airport.

Officials say motorists should allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes to navigate the airport roads. It may take 5 to 10 minutes to get through the backup to reach the curbside to drop off or pick up passengers, for example.
The airport road congestion is worse than normal because Hartsfield-Jackson closed some lanes on the outer and lower roadways for the construction of a massive canopies that will be built over the curbside area.
It's part of the airport's $6 billion modernization and expansion plan. The roadwork will continue for months.

With less space to maneuver around the outer roadway at the terminal, shuttle traffic is backing up onto the road approaching the terminal -- adding to the backup of cars headed to the inner roadway to drop off or pick up passengers.
Airport officials are trying to keep motorists from waiting at the curbside for passengers to arrive, which can contribute to the congestion as other cars wait for an open spot.
