There should be no weather issues on the commute into work Wednesday, but Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said you might want to factor in some extra drive time on the way home.
Right around 4 p.m., Monahan is expecting a good coverage of showers and thunderstorms across metro Atlanta. A cold front is moving in Wednesday, and when it collides with the warm and humid air sitting over North Georgia, strong to severe storms are possible, he said.
“As you get ready to leave the office this afternoon, it’s going to turn pretty stormy,” Monahan said. “Some gusty wind possible in these storms, along with the heavy rain and lightning.”
All of North Georgia is considered at a low-level risk of severe weather Wednesday, a Level 1 out of 5. Up until lunchtime, Monahan expects showers and storms to be isolated to scattered. The storms should become widespread in the mountains by early afternoon before moving into the northside of metro Atlanta.
With the clouds and rain around, Atlanta’s projected high is 86 degrees Wednesday.
“Yes, there are a few showers out there, but I think for the most part you will be OK for your morning drive,” Monahan said. “Rain chance just about 20%. You got places to be around lunchtime, though? You might need to leave a little extra time. It may be a day to order lunch to be delivered to the office.”
Rain chances will increase to about 40% at lunchtime and jump to 60% for the evening drive, according to Channel 2. Monahan expects storm activity to settle down by sunset before North Georgia turns partly to mostly cloudy overnight.
Thursday will see a similar pattern with isolated morning showers and another round of storms for the afternoon, he said, but rain chances are lower at about 40%. That daily 40% chance sticks around through the weekend, according to the latest forecast.
