Wednesday will be another afternoon to enjoy T-shirt-and-shorts weather before the next chance of severe storms rolls into North Georgia.

A storm system that could bring a severe weather outbreak to parts of the Mississippi Valley should weaken by the time it enters North Georgia late Wednesday night, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon. Locally, heavy rain will be the primary impact, with a threat of damaging wind in far North Georgia and a very low risk of large hail and tornadoes, she said.

“It’s not an all-day event, not a long-term event, either,” Deon said. “That is the good news. Before the rain arrives, its going to be a warm afternoon.”

Temperatures are expected to top out at 81 degrees in Atlanta on Wednesday, nearly 10 degrees above average for this time of year. Ahead of the overnight rain, Deon expects the region to stay mainly dry.

A few light showers are possible Wednesday morning, but there should be plenty of time to get outside and enjoy the nice weather.

“During the afternoon, warm, maybe a little bit breezy at times, but mainly dry,” she said. “We’ll have those clouds building in and then overnight tonight, that’s when the storms arrive.”

Deon expects showers to begin firing up over parts of northwest Georgia by 10 or 11 p.m. Wednesday. The rain will spread into the rest of the region during the overnight hours, she said, wetting roads in metro Atlanta by the start of the Thursday morning drive.

The threat of severe weather to the west is moderate, a Level 4 out of 5, which indicates widespread severe storms. Parts of North Georgia are considered to be at a marginal Level 1 risk, with isolated severe storms possible.

“Even still, you’re definitely going to want to have a way to be alerted in the event there are any kind of warnings issued for our area,” Deon said.

The storms should move quickly, clearing out for much of the region before noon, she said. Behind the cold front, Deon expects temperatures to drop. Thursday’s projected high is 74 degrees, and temperatures will fall back into the 50s by Friday morning, according to the latest forecast.

Atlanta's projected high is 81 degrees Wednesday ahead of a chance of overnight storms.
