The official start of summer may still be weeks away, but for all intents and purposes, summertime is rolling right along in North Georgia.
Well ahead of the summer solstice on June 21, temperatures will rise above average Wednesday for another hot and humid day in North Georgia, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. There won’t be much in the way of rain to tamp down the heat, despite a 20% chance of a shower or storm.
“It’s going to feel more like late June this afternoon,” Monahan said. “We get up to about 90. We should stay mainly dry this afternoon in Atlanta.”
Typically, highs are in the mid-80s at the start of June. Atlanta’s projected high is 90 degrees, but areas near Athens could reach highs of 93 on Wednesday. The day is off to a warm start with morning lows in the upper 60s and low 70s.
Other than rising heat, there should be no issue for outdoor plans this afternoon. Monahan is expecting mostly dry conditions with a couple of pop-up showers around the start of the evening commute. The rain chance increases to 40% Thursday, he said.
“Tomorrow there are storms around. It won’t spoil the whole day, though,” he said. “Second half of the day is where we’ll see some of those storms. Through early afternoon, it should be OK on Thursday, and Friday the humidity is going to start to drop just a little bit.”
Monahan said it will be noticeably more comfortable Friday afternoon with less moisture in the air. Rain chances remain low through the weekend, and temperatures will be closer to average, according to the latest forecast.

Over the next few days, Monahan said there is a 70% chance an area of storms in the northern Caribbean becomes a tropical system, but it should not impact weather locally.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins Wednesday. There have been no preseason tropical systems, which is unusual for the month of May. Not since 2013 has hurricane season begun without any preceding tropical development.
“This is going to track toward Florida,” Monahan said of the Caribbean storms. “I do not think this is going to be an issue for us, but we could have a tropical depression or a tropical storm in the Atlantic in the next couple of days.”
