After some much-needed rain fell overnight, metro Atlanta will turn breezy and sunny on Wednesday afternoon.

The rainfall helped drought conditions in the region, but it didn’t eradicate them. October has been particularly dry for Atlanta. The city has recorded 1.25 inches of rain so far this month, which is about half of what is recorded in a typical year, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.

Showers brought about Tuesday by a cold front added somewhat to that total, but didn’t amount to much, he said. Only a few areas west of Atlanta saw accumulation of more than a half-inch.

The front is on its way out Wednesday morning, Monahan said, and it will carry the clouds and wet weather away with it.

“It’s going to be a cooler day, a breezier day, but a mostly sunny one,” he said. “A nice day for outdoor plans for your Wednesday.”

Instead of the 70s, most of North Georgia will be in the 60s this afternoon as the breeze filters in, he said. Atlanta’s projected high is 66 degrees, which is 5 degrees below average for the end of October.

The day is off to a milder start, however. A few neighborhoods are waking up to temperatures in the 60s. Much cooler weather is in store Thursday morning, with lows in the 40s, but 70s return for Thursday afternoon, according to Monahan.

“For today, for tomorrow, for Friday, into a lot of Saturday, we’re going to stay dry,” he said. “But as we go into Sunday and parts of Monday — that’s Halloween — we are going to see some rain in parts of North Georgia.”

Monahan expects more of the region to record measurable rainfall over the weekend. Sunday is shaping up to be a wet day with showers 70% likely during the daylight hours, according to the latest forecast. Some of that rain could carry over into Halloween but will likely become scattered by prime trick-or-treating hours, he said.

Atlanta's projected high is 66 degrees on Wednesday as clouds clear and the city dries out.
