Conditions are right Tuesday for an encore showing of the afternoon storms that dumped more than 2 inches of rain across parts of metro Atlanta the day before.

The same cold front that produced Monday’s rain has stalled across the area Tuesday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. Add in the high humidity, and Monahan said the rain gear will be needed for a second day in a row.

“Keep the umbrella handy today, tomorrow, Thursday, into Friday into the weekend as well,” he said. “Rain and storms are going to be likely across North Georgia.”

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan is calling for an additional 1 to 3 inches of rainfall, with locally heavier amounts, in metro Atlanta by this weekend.

The city is getting a chance to dry out Monday morning ahead of the afternoon rain, but isolated showers are falling before daybreak across the northeast Georgia mountains. Monahan said showers should be isolated to scattered until about 1 p.m., and then rain becomes 60% likely as shower activity ramps up.

By the time the evening drive rolls around, he expects widespread heavy rain in metro Atlanta and south of the city, where the cold front has stalled.

“This is the cold front that brought us rain and storms yesterday,” Monahan said. “Right along it, we’re going to see more rain and storms develop later this morning and through the afternoon. Heavy downpours around, and that will keep us in the 80s.”

Atlanta’s projected high is 85 degrees.

In Tuesday’s storm offering, Monahan is expecting not only heavy rain but some lightning and gusty wind as well. There are no active weather watches or warnings in North Georgia, but another round of flash flood warnings are possible this afternoon if a large amount of rain falls quickly.

Prior to this week, Atlanta was experiencing a deficit of more than an inch of rainfall compared to what is typically recorded in the month of June. In just a few hours Monday, the city overcame that deficit as 2.4 inches of rain fell.

After Monday's 2.4 inches of rain, Atlanta has now recorded above-average rainfall for the month of June.

Monahan said rainfall totals for the month of June, and for 2022 to date, are now considered above average. And more rain will be added by the end of the week. By Sunday, Monahan expects an additional 1 to 3 inches to fall across the metro Atlanta area.

Locally higher amounts are possible, he said. The silver lining to all this rain? Lower temperatures.

“Eighties all the way through the end of the week, and through the weekend as well, with more rain, more storms all the way through Sunday,” Monahan said.

Another 60% chance of rain is in Tuesday's forecast, and the projected high is 85 degrees.
