Feel the chill in the air? It’s the first signal a change in seasons is right around the corner.
Temperatures in metro Atlanta are in the 50s Tuesday morning for the first time since May 10. It’s been 126 days since the city has seen a chilly morning that warranted a light jacket or sweatshirt, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
“Beautiful weather,” Monahan said. “This is kind of the sweet spot of late summer, early fall where the air is dry, you get the cool mornings, and we still get nice, warm afternoons. And that’s what we’re going to see later on today.”
The dry air is to thank for the cooler start. A cold front moved through Monday, sweeping away clouds and rain chances and dropping the humidity. Dewpoints, the measure of moisture in the air, are low on Tuesday morning, contributing to some comfortable, if a bit chilly, conditions outside.
Some areas of the mountains are waking up to temperatures in the 40s, Monahan said. With “nothing but sunshine” in the forecast, he said the entire region can look forward to a nice warmup Tuesday afternoon.
“We’re up to about 81 degrees,” Monahan said of Atlanta’s forecast. “That is below average for this time of year, more like an early fall day, and it’s going to feel really nice this afternoon across North Georgia.”
Fall officially begins in nine days with the fall equinox on Sept. 22. Monahan is expecting the dry air to stick around through at least next week, and possibly a little longer.
“It’s going to nose up, the humidity, over the weekend, but overall we are looking great all the way through the next several days,” Monahan said. “Really, the next couple of weeks likely are going to be pretty dry across North Georgia.”
