Some showers remain Thursday morning after a system of strong storms moved through North Georgia overnight.

The showers are heavy at times, but there is little lightning and no severe weather associated with them, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Jennifer Lopez. Only those north of Atlanta are getting wet Thursday, but the rain will eventually clear off to the east.

“There is a front that is slowly working its way through our area,” Lopez said. “Until it moves to our south, which will be by the afternoon, we do have that slight chance for a few stray showers early on. By the later part of the day, more sunshine and a little bit more wind.”

Waves of storm Wednesday brought about a half-inch of rainfall in Atlanta and triggered severe thunderstorm warnings late into the night. In southwest Atlanta just south of Cleveland Avenue, a tree limb fell on a family’s home on Grand Avenue about 11 p.m., injuring all five people inside.

A tree fell on a house in the 2700 block of Grand Avenue as storms moved through southwest Atlanta around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Five people were taken to a hospital to be checked for injuries.

Alicia Verdugo said her sister, her brother-in-law and their three older children were just making dinner when the limb came crashing through the roof and split the single-story home in two. All five were taken to a hospital to be checked for injuries, Verdugo said.

The storms also knocked out several traffic lights in metro Atlanta, and signals at some intersections are flashing red Thursday morning. Lights were out at Moreland Avenue at Memorial Drive in DeKalb County, along Camp Creek Parkway and at Campbellton and Barge roads in Atlanta, and at C.W. Grant Parkway near I-75 in the Mountain View area.

Additional tree limbs could fall Thursday afternoon, when Lopez expects North Georgia to turn gusty with wind speeds up to 20 mph.

Thursday afternoon is looking pretty good for outdoor activities, she said, as rain chances drop off and temperatures climb into the mid-80s. The projected high for Atlanta is 86 degrees.

Lopez expects the wind to die down around sunset, and drier air will move in. While the humidity is sticking around Thursday, Friday morning should be a little more comfortable and even a little cooler.

“We normally are in the middle to the upper 60s, but 63 tomorrow morning (in Atlanta) and 50s for our North Georgia mountains,” Lopez said. “You may need that sweatshirt to get you started up in Blairsville.”

Temperatures are headed back to the upper 80s Friday afternoon, and warmer weather is in store for the weekend, according to the latest forecast. After a 30% chance of thunderstorms Saturday, drier and warmer conditions should settle in Sunday.

By Monday, Lopez is calling for a return to 90-degree heat with a projected high of 92 degrees for Atlanta.

Atlanta's projected high is 86 degrees Thursday, and a 20% chance of a shower should taper off this afternoon.
