North Georgia fared well overnight as a weather system that brought severe storms to parts of the country weakened and moved into the area Thursday.
There were no reports of severe weather damage locally, and the heavy rain is winding down in advance of the Thursday morning drive, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon. While roads could be wet in spot, Deon said commuters should experience low impact from the wet weather overnight.
The region isn’t quite in the clear, however.
“The line of storms just kind of fell apart as it moved into North Georgia, and now we are just dealing with some scattered light rain showers,” Deon said. “That is for now, but this front still has to make its way through ... We could still be in line for some isolated strong storms, or even a severe storm or two.”
Areas from Athens to the south are still at risk for severe storms Thursday afternoon as the cold front that produced the late-night showers sweeps through North Georgia. With afternoon heating, there could be enough storm energy to kick things up again around 4 or 5 p.m., Deon said.
“It’s those storms that could pack a punch with some heavy rainfall and those strong damaging wind gusts,” she said. “By this evening, we all will start to dry out. The front will have pushed past the area, and it’s going to look a lot nicer.”

Deon said the sky over North Georgia will clear first to the north and west, and eventually the entire region will get a chance to dry out under some sunshine. Temperatures are headed from the 60s Thursday morning into the low 70s this afternoon, with a projected high of 71 degrees in Atlanta.
The clearing sky will “bring us full sunshine” on Friday, she said, when the city is expected to reach a high of 77 degrees. There is no rain in the forecast Friday, but Easter weekend won’t be so fortunate.
“As we head into the weekend, we’re watching out for the possibility of rain and storms, especially Saturday, and then going into Sunday some scattered activity could be possible,” Deon said.
Rain chances drop from 60% Saturday to 30% Sunday, according to the latest forecast. It should be comfortable for egg hunts and family celebrations Sunday with a projected high of 73 degrees.
