Take the umbrella with you Monday for what will be another hot and stormy day for North Georgia.
Atlanta is likely to record its 38th day in the 90s Monday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. The heat will add fuel to moisture coming in from the north, setting the stage for some afternoon showers and storms, he said.
“After the heat builds, through about lunchtime, the storms develop,” Monahan said. “That will bring temperatures down. Slow-moving heavy downpours in the forecast for the afternoon.”
It is warm but dry to start the day, with temperatures in the mid-70s in metro Atlanta. Monahan expects those numbers to rise through about lunchtime, and they will fall once the afternoon rain moves in. The city’s projected high is 90 degrees.
In a typical year, Atlanta records 47 days in the 90s.
“We’re not even in August yet,” Monahan said. “It’s been a hot summer, and it’s going to continue to be.”
Monahan said showers over Tennessee and Kentucky will eventually make their way south. Through about 1 p.m., he expects North Georgia to stay mainly dry. Those with aspirations for outdoor plans Monday would be wise to head out early, he said.
“As these clouds come in from the north, as that moisture comes in from the north, showers and storms get going in through mountains, through metro Atlanta,” he said. “It will be kind of scattered around. Not a washout — there’s going to be sunshine, too.”
With a 60% chance of showers and storms, not everyone will see the rain Monday. Monahan expects the activity to diminish heading toward sunset, and Tuesday should be a much drier day with rain just 30% likely.
Even fewer showers are in Wednesday’s forecast, according to Monahan, as showers become isolated for the middle of the week. Mostly dry conditions will allow temperatures to climb even higher.
“By Wednesday and Thursday, we’re climbing toward the mid-90s in spots,” he said. “Scattered storms are back in the forecast for the weekend.”
