After a weekend that brought the coldest weather yet this winter, temperatures are on the rise in North Georgia.
Atlanta recorded a low of 26 degrees on Saturday as an Arctic blast of air brought flurries and single-digit wind chills to other parts of the region. North Georgia will get a chance to thaw out this week, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said, and it will begin to feel more like springtime.
“Goodbye to the Arctic blast. It’s moving away,” Monahan said. “As we go into Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, our air is going to come off the West Coast. That is much warmer weather for us, and by the time we hit Wednesday and Thursday we’re going to have highs in some spots that could push 70 degrees.”
The city is headed for a high of 57 degrees Monday, which is two degrees above average for this time of year. It is cold Monday morning, however, with lows in 30s before the sun comes up.
Monahan said a mix of sun and clouds should make for a mild day, similar to Sunday’s weather. With no chance of rain, Monday should provide ample opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities, he said.

On Tuesday, Monahan expects highs to reach 60 degrees. Wednesday should be slightly cooler as more moisture builds in, and rain chances increase. While most of North Georgia will stay dry through the middle of the week, the northwest corner of the state could see showers as early as Wednesday evening, according to Monahan.
More widespread rain is the forecast for the end of the week.
“Thursday and Friday as that warm air moves in, the rain moves in too — a lot of it,” Monahan said. “An inch or two of rain is possible.”

There is no rain to contend with Monday, and that means dry pavement on metro Atlanta roads. The Monday morning drive is off to a smooth start, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
There are no major delays on any interstates, but commuters on the Westside could run into trouble getting to I-20, the Traffic Center reported at 6:30 a.m. Traffic lights are flashing at the intersection of Thornton and Humphrey Hill roads, causing big southbound delays on Thornton Road into Austell.
