After a dry weekend, pavement is dry all across North Georgia on Monday morning for what should be a comfortable drive into work.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said humidity has increased slightly over weekend levels, but that won’t mean any rain before lunchtime. Showers and thunderstorms will return to the forecast this afternoon, however.
Rain chances Monday are still considered isolated at about 30%, according to Monahan. That number will increase as the week goes on, he said.
“It’s going to get a little wet a little later on this week,” he said. “I hope you at least got a little time to enjoy what was a really nice August weekend.”
The rain Monday will accompany a cold front slated to arrive in the northeast Georgia mountains this afternoon. Monahan said the mountains should stay pretty dry as the front moves through, but rain chances will increase as it approaches metro Atlanta mid- to late afternoon.
An isolated severe storm is possible across metro Atlanta and to the south, where the National Weather Service considers the severe weather risk to be a low-end Level 1. Pop-up storms are mostly likely south of I-20, Monahan said.

“It’s a good idea to send the kids in with an umbrella in the backpack today,” he said. “We’re up to about 90 degrees. Watch out for a little lightning in the late afternoon.”
Monahan expects the front to move through overnight, setting up Tuesday to be the driest day this week. Humidity should also take a step back Tuesday, he said, and temperatures will respond in kind. Atlanta’s projected high that day is 88 degrees.
With more showers and storms around, it will get even cooler as the week goes on. By Thursday and Friday, with a 60% chance of thunderstorms, Monahan is calling for highs in the low 80s.
