Light rain is falling across parts of North Georgia to start Monday, but by the day’s end drier and cooler weather is in the forecast.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon expects the wet weather will be done by lunchtime, even though the clouds producing the morning showers are likely to linger throughout the day. The showers are concentrated in the northeast corner of the state before daybreak.
“A bit of an inconvenience for some of you getting out and about in metro Atlanta,” she said. “We’re not seeing a whole lot of rain, but we definitely have the clouds around, and that’s actually helping us out as far as temperatures go.”
Atlanta is in the low 60s before the sun comes up, and temperatures are not expected to move much throughout the day. A projected high of 66 degrees is in the forecast, which is eight degrees below average for this time of year.
Deon said the cooler weather, and the scattered light rain, is thanks to a storm system passing by Georgia.
“As we get into the later part of the day, that is when we’ll see those clouds breaking up a little bit,” she said. “More so, winds will really start to ramp up from the northwest, and that’s going to start to bring in that dry air.”
A clear sky Monday night will mean a cool start Tuesday, she said. A low of 42 degrees is forecast for Atlanta. Some areas in the mountains could see lows in the 30s, according to Channel 2.
Monday’s showers are adding to the inch or more of rain that fell across the region over the weekend. Deon said that rain could help to bring pollen levels down after several days in the high range last week.
Monday’s count is 779 pollen particles per cubic meter of air, which is still considered high. Trees like oak, mulberry, sycamore, pine and ash were the top contributors, according to Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, the organization that tracks the daily pollen count.
The allergy reprieve could be short-lived, as more dry days are in the forecast this week. After Monday, there is no rain in the forecast and temperatures should rebound into the 80s by Friday, according to Channel 2.
