North Georgia will eventually break into the sunshine Monday, but it will have to wade through some mist and fog first.

There’s plenty of low clouds as the Monday morning drive gets underway, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. After about lunchtime, things should turn a little drier and a whole lot brighter after a rainy weekend.

“A little break in the rain, at least the heavy stuff, over the next couple of days,” Monahan said. “That will be good for the afternoon. This morning, a little mist and drizzle to start the day.”

Rain chances should stay below 20% for the afternoon, he said. While it won’t be totally dry, there should be no big weather issues to contend with for the evening drive.

“With the limited rain chances today, a bit more sun for the afternoon,” Monahan said. “We’ll start kind of gray this morning, but some more sunshine after about 1 p.m. today. We’re going to top out in the low to mid-80s for the most part.”

With a projected high of 85 degrees in Atlanta, it should be a cooler-than-average day, according to Channel 2.

Monahan said North Georgia will turn wetter as the week goes on. Contributing to elevated rain chances is a potential for tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico. If the system develops into a tropical depression or storm, it could pull in some additional moisture and trigger downpours in North Georgia on Thursday, he said.

Overall, the chance for tropical development is low.

Scattered showers and storms return to the forecast on Friday, according to Monahan.

More sunshine is in store Monday with a 20% chance of an afternoon shower or storm and a projected high of 85 degrees in Atlanta.
