Temperatures are dropping Friday after a cold front swept North Georgia the night before, bringing heavy rain and storms to parts of the region.
The rain has cleared out Friday morning, and sunshine will return this afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. Atlanta is starting the day in the low 50s, but Monahan said some neighborhoods could drop into the 30s before sunrise.
“You find your place in the sunshine, it’s not going to feel as cold,” he said. “Temperatures are definitely coming down, from the 70s yesterday to the 60s today, and we’re going to be in the 50s for highs over the weekend.”
The projected high Friday is 68 degrees. Monahan said it will stay dry Friday and into the weekend, even as another cold front moves in this evening.
“Just a few patchy clouds in the forecast ahead of our next cold front,” he said. “This is going to get here tonight. It’s not going to have any rain with it, but it will bring our temperatures down a little bit more as we go into tomorrow.”
He expects temperatures in the 50s under the lights for Friday night football. With mostly clear to partly cloudy conditions, it will be “a comfortable night for football,” he said.
Even colder air moves in for the weekend. According to the latest forecast, Atlanta could wake up to temperatures in the 40s Saturday morning, and some neighborhoods are predicted to be freezing Sunday.
A freeze watch is scheduled to go into effect at 10 p.m. Saturday and expire at 9 a.m. Sunday. All of North Georgia is included in the National Weather Service’s watch area.
“Even with the sunshine, we’re going to see it gets chilly around North Georgia this weekend,” Monahan said.

Pavement could be wet in spots as the Friday morning drive gets underway. The biggest delays at the start of the commute are in DeKalb County, where a crash temporarily blocked all southbound lanes of I-85 at Chamblee Tucker Road.
“You are definitely going to want to avoid this area,” WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reporter Heather Catlin said. “Go ahead and use Buford Highway as an alternate.”
