North Georgia is getting the opportunity to dry out Friday morning before scattered showers return for the afternoon.

With a 40% chance of showers and storms, only parts of the region will get wet Friday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. Things are looking much drier this weekend, when rain chances drop into the isolated range and sunshine returns.

“It’s going to be really nice by Saturday and Sunday,” Monahan said. “Hot — it’s summertime, it’s gonna be hot — but we’ll have plenty of sun over the weekend.”

There is no rain to trouble the Friday morning drive, a marked change from Thursday’s wet and messy conditions. Some eastern Atlanta suburbs recorded more than 2 inches of rainfall during Thursday’s thunderstorms, which triggered severe weather warnings, power outages and hours of traffic and flight delays.

Lingering moisture is contributing to more cloud cover and high humidity Friday, and drivers could run into some areas of fog early this morning. After a warm start in the low 70s, and Monahan is expecting a return to average temperatures this afternoon with a projected high of 90 degrees in Atlanta.

“It’s going to start a little gray this morning across North Georgia,” he said.

Despite the clouds, Monahan said there should be considerably less rain Friday. He expects showers and storms to fire up after lunchtime, and those south of I-20 will have the best chance of development.

“We could have some bigger storms down toward LaGrange, Griffin and Eatonton as we go toward sunset tonight, but a lot of the area is going to stay pretty dry today,” Monahan said. “And those spots that do see some rain today, a good chance you’re going to stay completely dry tomorrow.”

He is calling for a 20% chance of rain Saturday, which should be a brighter and hotter day with afternoon highs in the low to mid-90s. More of the same is in store Sunday, according to the latest forecast.

“The clouds and rain have been your excuse to do things inside,” Monahan said. “This weekend, the sun will be your excuse to do things outside.”

Atlanta's projected high is 90 degrees Friday with a 40% chance of an afternoon shower or storm.
