Temperatures Friday afternoon should run more than 10 degrees below average this time of year, kicking off what will be a chilly weekend for North Georgia.
A freeze warning, frost advisories and a cold breeze are all in the forecast for this weekend, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. The higher elevations of the North Georgia mountains could also see a little snow, a reminder that winter is not too far behind us, Monahan said.
“April weather can be kind of hit-or-miss,” he said. “This time of year, you get the cold nights, but you can also still get very warm temperatures. We’re going to start the weekend on a cold note.”
Metro Atlanta is waking up to 40s and 50s on Friday morning, and temperatures are only expected to reach 58 degrees in the city this afternoon, according to Channel 2. Showers are 20% likely Friday, but Monahan does not expect more than a few sprinkles.
“A little cold but a lot sunny,” he said. “Especially as we head through tomorrow, we’re going to have a good bit of sunshine. Sunday is your best day this weekend with plenty of sunshine. We’re going to be up near 70 degrees on Sunday.”
Monahan said the weather should pose no problems for outdoor plans this weekend, aside from dictating your wardrobe. Those headed out to Truist Park this evening for the Braves’ second game against the Cincinnati Reds should take note: It’s going to be a much colder night for baseball.
Temperatures should be in the mid-50s at first pitch, which is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. By the end of the game, Monahan said numbers will be in the 40s.
“If you were cold last night in a sweatshirt and a hat, bring the heavy coat tonight,” he said. “It’s going to be cold tonight out at the ballpark.”
It will get even colder overnight. The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for the mountains and frost advisories for parts of the northwest Atlanta suburbs, including Cherokee and Forsyth counties.
Flurries are possible in the mountains early Saturday morning, but Monahan said they will not amount to much. In town, temperatures are expected to bottom out at 37 degrees overnight.
With several days of rain this week, pollen counts have been held at bay, but Monahan said numbers will start creeping up this weekend. Friday’s count is back up in the extreme range at 2,508 pollen particles per cubic meter of air, according to Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, the organization that tracks the daily pollen count.
Windy conditions this weekend will only stir up the yellow stuff, Monahan said, and warmer weather next week could contribute to even higher pollen levels.
“This time of year, even when it gets cold, a warm-up is never that far behind,” he said. “We’re back in the 80s next week.”
