Woman dies in fiery wreck on I-285 in Clayton County

A fatal multivehicle crash on I-285 in Clayton County caused major delays for motorists Wednesday morning. At least one vehicle went up in flames. (John Spink / john.spink@ajc.com)

A woman was killed in a fiery multivehicle crash in Clayton County that caused major delays for I-285 commuters Wednesday morning, police said.

Officers responded to the wreck in the eastbound lanes near Old Dixie Road around 6:10 a.m. and found a woman dead on the interstate, Clayton police spokesman Johnny Carroll said from the scene. The woman’s name was not released.

Another person was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

At least one vehicle went up in flames, Carroll said. The charred SUV could be seen on the left shoulder of the interstate Wednesday morning.

🚨🚨Fatal Accident on I-285E & Old Dixie Rd🚨🚨 On February 16, 2022, at 6:10 a.m., Clayton County Police Officers responded to an accident with injuries on I-285 east near Old Dixie Road, Forest Park, GA. Upon arrival, officers discovered one female to be deceased in the roadway. The other driver was transported to a local hospital and is in critical condition. One vehicle did catch fire during the accident. The investigation is still ongoing at this time. The victim information will not be released at this time until next-of-kin is notified. Please be advised in reference to traffic. All lanes on I-285 east are shut down at this time in order to conduct a thorough investigation. Please use an alternate route.

Authorities remained at the crash scene for nearly five hours investigating and clearing the wreck.

Carroll did not say what caused the crash or if any charges are expected.

At least one vehicle went up in in flames after the I-285 wreck.
