The Panthers will open the season hosting Ball State at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 2.

To stress, these are just possibilities. Nothing has been decided and things may change depending upon injuries and other factors.

If you’re curious: nine true freshmen played last season, nine played in 2014 and 15 in 2013.

You may see these players at Georgia State’s scrimmage on Saturday. The scrimmage will start at 11 a.m. at the practice complex. According to the school’s website, Georgia State students, faculty/staff, alumni and season ticket holders, including those from the Perimeter College campuses, can attend.

Darius Stubbs

Running back

5-10, 200

Luella High School

Offensive coordinator Luke Huard: He’s done some really good things in practices. He’s certainly shown the ability to play.

Only because of the depth at running back, I would be surprised if Stubbs plays this season. However, the season-ending injury to Taz Bateman brings the possibility of Stubbs getting carries a bit closer to being real.

Devin Gentry

Wide receiver

5-10, 190

Male High School, Louisville, Ky.

Huard: He brings great speed and athleticism.

A running back in high school, Gentry seems to have made the transition to wide receiver just like a few of the Georgia State players before him, including Penny Hart, who last year was named the Sun Belt Conference newcomer of the year. This group isn’t as deep as running back, so it would seem that Gentry’s odd of playing might be less than Stubbs’.

Shamarious Gilmore and Nick Meyer

Offensive linemen

6-3, 285 and 6-5 260

Drew High School and St. Xavier High School, Cincinnati

Huard: they’ve come a long way too. Two guys who have a really bright future. They are learning the system fast and getting great reps going up a great front.

Cedric Stone

Cornerback

5-10, 185

Independence High School, Charlotte, N.C.

Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter: He’s competing to be our third or fourth corner.

The secondary is fairly deep with a lot of upperclassmen. If Stone breaks into the rotation, that would speak well of him.

Terry Thomas

Defensive lineman

6-3, 265

Luella High School

Minter: He’s competing for playing time in an older, veteran group. He’s doing a great job of making us notice him.

Like the running backs and secondary, the defensive line is a group filled with seniors and redshirt juniors, including all three starters and several key backups.
