The Ole Miss Rebels’ coaching staff have spent the past summer determining which players will help them attain another successful season, but one player’s camp performance has been an unexpected surprise.
Freshman Dawson Knox, a walk-on tight end, was singled out by coach Hugh Freeze following Tuesday’s practice.
“Dawson Knox has had a great camp,” Freeze told reporters. “He’s an athletic kid, and he’s going to be a big kid, but he needs a year to get ready. He’s been a big surprise.”

Knox was initially recruited as a duel-threat quarterback, according to Rivals, and held offers from Air Force, Austin Peay and Cornell.
It looks as though the 6-foot-4, 222-pound Knox made the right decision when he chose to eschew his three offers and take his chances as a walk-on in the SEC.
Ole Miss certainly has enough candidates for the quarterback job, but letting Knox throw the ball on a tight end reverse would be spectacular.
Although he may not see much time on the field this season, it’s not often that freshman walk-ons get public praise in the SEC. Don’t be surprised if this particular walk-on makes an impact down the road.
