South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier turned 70 years old this year. “The Head Ball Coach” is among the best college football coaches of all time, with a 226-85-2 record and a national title in 1996.

In addition, he may stand alone as the greatest quote machine in the sport. To honor the Head Ball Coach as his illustrious career winds down, the AJC will present a “Throwback Thursday” every week during football season in honor of his quotes, which – in addition to his coaching career – are also Hall of Fame material.

The quote:

"Why is it that during recruiting season they sign all the great players, but when it comes time to play the game, we have all the great players? I don't understand that. What happens to them?" – 2008

The context of the quote:

Georgia usually has a higher recruiting ranking that Spurrier’s teams, yet Spurrier-coached teams usually get the better of the Bulldogs.

The reaction to the quote:

Georgia fans weren’t happy. Gators and Gamecocks fans were amused.

The push back from the quote:

Georgia would be Spurrier two years in a row (’08-’09) after the quote, then Spurrier won the next three.

The end result of the quote:

Spurrier owns a 16-6 record over Georgia in his career as a coach.
