Last week, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier made a joke about his quarterbacks following a practice.

"Quarterbacks? They couldn't hit the broad side of a barn right now – I don't know if we could even hit that indoor facility right there," Spurrier said as part of a comedic exchange with reporters. LINK

Was there any truth behind that joke? If Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage is any indication, maybe there was. Josh Kendall of TheState.com reports that following the scrimmage, the quarterback position is a three-player race between Shon Carson, Jacob August and Darius Paulk.

Here’s what Spurrier was quoted as saying on Satuday:

“We’re too slow. We just too slow. Our quarterbacks don’t move their feet and fire the ball,” Spurrier said. “The thing all quarterbacks have to do is get the ball out of their hands. (Freshman Lorenzo Nunez) is our only true scrambler. He can take off. Our (other) guys need to find somewhere to throw the ball.”

Not much humor to be found in those statements. South Carolina fans have to be seriously worrying about the quarterback position on their roster heading into the season.

If not, it could be a long season.

Last season, the Gamecocks finished 7-6 and the defense was the problem. That unit finished 92 in total defense among FBS schools. Only Texas A&M ranked lower among SEC schools.

Now the offense appears to be the unit most in question. Hopefully for the Gamecocks, the quarterback question is answered soon. If not, you can expect Spurrier to throw a lot of visors this season.
It could be one of the better throws of the season for South Carolina.
