After a weeklong trip to see his brother at Georgia Tech, 4-star offensive guard Donavaughn Campbell, an LSU commit, has some thinking to do.
Campbell has spent the last week in Atlanta visiting his brother Christian Campbell, an incoming freshman quarterback with the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech just happened to be one of his top three schools, along with LSU and Alabama.
During his visit, Campbell had the opportunity to talk with some of the coaches and observe practice as the Georgia Tech staff tries to woo the 6-foot-4, 347 pounder out of Ponchatoula, La., from his home state.
He’s rated as the No. 9 overall prospect out of Louisiana, and he committed to LSU last January out of 10 offers, including Alabama, UGA, FSU and Texas.
“(The Georgia Tech coaches were) just telling me about the school and stuff,” Campbell told the AJC. “I have a good chance of playing when I come in as a freshman if I do everything right, learn the playbook and stuff.”
Campbell admitted that he was leaning “a little bit more” toward the Yellow Jackets after his visit and said that his parents “love the idea” of he and his brother Christian playing together at the collegiate level.
Likewise, Campbell said that playing with Christian was “very important” and noted that if he were able to play as a true freshman, he and his brother would graduate at the same time, assuming Christian redshirts this season behind incumbent starter Justin Thomas.
Campbell also liked the academic opportunities provided by Georgia Tech that he felt would help him in his career after graduation. He has also made friends with some Tech players other than his brother.
“They’re good guys,” Campbell said. “I’ve made a few relationships with some of the guys already and I’m cool with them.”
But to put the brakes on the Georgia Tech love affair, Campbell reaffirmed that he is “still pretty solid” with LSU.
“It (LSU) was somewhere I always wanted to play,” Campbell said. “I think I’d do good over there. And it’s close to home.”
Campbell did confirm, however, that he planned to take an official visit to Georgia Tech later this year and plans on attending some games with his eye specifically on the Oct. 24 matchup between the Yellow Jackets and Florida State.
