UGA will have the chance to make up some ground at “Dawg Night” this week with the nation’s No. 1 athlete.
Demetris Robertson, who is a receiver from Savannah, is a recruiting priority for UGA, but he said at The Opening last week that Alabama and Stanford were his co-leaders.
Robertson has UGA all the way back in his No. 3 spot. He’s going up for Dawg Night on Saturday, and it will be a big chance for UGA to impress his family.
“They are right there in the thick of it,” Robertson said of UGA. “They’ve been wonderful to me. It is just me getting my mom up there with Coach (Mark) Richt. Then we’ll go from there.”
Robertson competed at The Opening last week to show what he has to offer on a national stage, but the four-star prospect did some scouting of his own. He got the chance to research a few of the Elite 11 quarterbacks he can choose to play with on Saturdays.
He certainly got an eyeful of UGA quarterback commitment Jacob Eason. The two played on the same team during the 7-on-7 tournament at Nike's all-star event in Oregon. Robertson said Eason had a simple message for him.
“He said we could do big things there,” Robertson told the AJC. “UGA wasn’t brought up a lot outside of that.”
What did Robertson think about Eason’s work?
“He was solid the short time he played,” Robertson said. “I know he can sling it long. I wanted to see how he was with the short and intermediate throws in coverage.”
Robertson said that Eason's short-to-medium balls last week were "on point" in Oregon. The rising senior was – along with everyone else – impressed by UGA receiver target Kyle Davis. That was one of his biggest takeaways from the event.
“Kyle gets better every time I see him,” Robertson said.
The players form their own opinions of their peers at all-star events. Players know who the real elite players are. Robertson’s evaluation of the Top 5 players at the event was very interesting. It says two things: 1) UGA is targeting the right guys; and 2) Georgia was well-represented at the event.
