One of top 10 overall prospects out of the state of Florida will be at UGA's Dawg Night prospect camp on July 18. Trayvon Mullen, a 4-star cornerback from Coconut Creek High School, will be at UGA's elite camp with two teammates, defensive back Malek Young (who is committed to UGA) and 4-star receiver Binjimen Victor.
It will be an opportunity for UGA to gain some ground with a prospect who’s interested, but needs to see something more. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Mullen rates as Florida’s No. 8 overall prospect, and he holds more than 40 scholarship offers. He recently told the AJC that LSU and Florida State are his co-leaders.
“Georgia does have a chance because of Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt and that my boy Malek (Young) is going there and that they are in the SEC,” Mullen said. “There’s a lot of reasons why. They have always been in my Top 10. Probably around six or seven. Maybe even at eight.”
His high school coach agreed with that assessment.
"UGA is also one of Trayvon's top schools," Coconut Creek coach Kareem Reid said. "He's very interested in taking a look at UGA that day and seeing what they are all about."
He recently released that listing of five schools, but with that message that things can change. When social media started reacting to that, he felt it was necessary to offer up another explanation. One tweet said that shouldn’t be considered his Top 5 schools at this time.
Mullen recently said that UGA could eventually contend for one of his five official visits.
“I like Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt a lot,” Mullen said. “He’s a good dude. They are doing a lot of big things at Georgia as far as secondary and defense. I could see myself playing there and being comfortable. I just feel like the SEC is a big deal. I feel like I can be an SEC player and be successful.”
He told the AJC he is aware of UGA's defensive back tradition with big names like Champ Bailey, Brandon Boykin, Sanders Commings and Reshad Jones, among others. He said it was "very important" to go to a program with an NFL track record at his spot.
The avid fisherman said Clemson, Florida State, UGA and LSU were among the schools recruiting him the hardest. He felt that the only two officials visits he knows he will take for sure are to Florida State and LSU. He may go on another trip to Oregon.
Mullen said he recently scored a 24 on his ACT and intends to study business management in college.
