Hours after video showed Florida State freshman QB De’Andre Johnson punching a woman in the face at a Tallahassee bar, the team announced late Monday night that he was dismissed from the program.

Jose Baez, Johnson’s attorney, released a statement on his client’s behalf.
“While it is clear from the video that De’Andre Johnson was not the initial aggressor, his family wants to take the lead in helping him learn and grow from this experience. He is currently participating in community service, and faith-based programs focused on battered women, substance abuse, and the empowerment of children. De’Andre is extremely embarrassed by this situation and would like to express his heartfelt apologies to everyone, including those who were directly affected, Coach Fisher and his teammates, the entire Florida State University community, as well as his family and friends.”
The Tallahassee State’s Attorney’s Office decided to charge Johnson with misdemeanor battery after viewing the video evidence. Johnson turned himself into authorities on June 30.
Johnson was originally suspended from the team on June 25 for “a violation of athletic department policy.” He was expected to compete for the backup quarterback position.
