Georgia State won’t open summer camp until August, so it’s a perfect time to start looking ahead to the teams the Panthers will face during the upcoming season.
I’ve already done the opener against Charlotte, Week 2 opponent New Mexico State and Week 3 opponent Oregon.
Let’s turn to Liberty. The Panthers will host Liberty for homecoming on Oct. 3. Kickoff is TBA.
Liberty
2014 record: 9-5, 4-1 and co-champions of the Big South.
Coach: Turner Gill, in his fourth season.
Starters returning: Seven on offense, six on defense, three on special teams.
Offensive system: One-back set.
Defensive system: 4-3.
Three significant stats last year:
- The Flames averaged 411.2 yards and 32 points per game. They were extremely efficient in the red zone, scoring 89.7 percent of the time.
- Defense allowed 380.6 yards and 26.6 points per game last year, in the middle of pack for FCS.
- The Flames finished No. 17 in the FCS polls.
Key starters returning:
- Quarterback Josh Woodrum accounted for 3,201 yards with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
- Leading rusher D.J. Abner ran for 1,289 yards and 15 touchdowns.
- Darrin Peterson had 85 receptions for 1,379 yards.
How does Georgia State match up
This is a game the Panthers should win. The offense should be able to move the ball well against a defense that, with the exception of the nose guard, will be under-sized.
The defense will just need to make a couple of stops against an offense loaded with seniors at the skill positions and on the offensive line.
