UGA’s only wide receiver commitment for the Class of 2016 is currently parked. Houston County 3-star WR Darion Anderson told the AJC he tore the meniscus in his knee late last month during a post-spring workout. He was working on his game independently and felt a “pop” and his knee started swelling that evening.
He knew something was up, had it checked out the next morning and learned about the injury.
“I was just working out running,” Anderson said. “I tore it sometime during the last week of May. I’ve never had an injury like this before. It is all kind of new to me. Its been different.”
Anderson had surgery to repair that meniscus on June 1. His doctors told him he should be cleared to play in mid-to-late July, but he felt it might be best to wait until the start of fall practices in August to really cut loose again. He was only able to watch his teammates compete at the 7-on-7 camp in Athens last week.
“I’m not used to this at all,” Anderson said. “The hardest part has been sleeping at night. I’ve had some swelling with it but now that is going down day-by-day.”

He got his UGA offer on Junior Day this year and committed within five days after that on March 3. The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder said his best time in the 40-yard dash was right at 4.4 seconds. He’s never caught any balls from UGA top QB recruit Jacob Eason, but was looking forward to it.

“It is kind of weird I’m the only receiver recruit for 2016 right now but I expect more to come,” Anderson said. “I’m expecting big things all the way around from the Class of 2016 at UGA.”
247sports rates him as a four-star receiver by its composite rankings matrix and as the nation’s No. 54 receiver for 2016. He’s ranked as the No. 25 overall prospect in Georgia. There’s some variance to his rankings as Rivals pegged him as a three-star and the No. 60 player in Georgia for his signing class.
Anderson told the AJC his grades were “in good shape” and he gets “As and Bs” in the classroom. He aims to pursue a degree in business or communications in college. He is not planning to enroll early at UGA.
He classified himself as a “deep ball” type receiver and named the post and go patterns as his favorite routes. He plans to make it to “Dawg Night” in Athens next month, but said it depends on his team’s camp schedule and his rehab. He’ll be the first member of his family to play college football.
The rising senior even articulated his own personal expectation for this year’s signing class.
“If we get all of these athletes on board that Georgia is looking at for the Class of 2016, then there’s no doubt we should win a national championship,” he said.
