Alvin Kamara and fellow Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd already have a nickname, even though Kamara hasn’t played in a game for the Volunteers.
Running backs coach Robert Gillespie calls them CMG, as in the “Chain-Moving Gang.”
Hurd, who rushed for 899 yards as a freshman last season, is proven.
Kamara is playing for his third school in three years.
Kamara, the AJC's player of the year at Norcross in 2012, signed with Alabama and played last year at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, where he rushed for 1,211 yards and 18 TDs in nine games.
But he’s fast and has shown this spring he’s ready to contribute for a SEC program.
"Not everybody gets to do this," Kamara told the AP. "Not everybody gets the chance we get, to come out here and play in front of some of the best fans in the country. Just being out here and competing with my teammates and in front of these fans, it's amazing."
Kamara was redshirted at Alabama and was suspended for the Sugar Bowl after the 2013 season. He then transferred to Hutchinson.
Kamara and Hurd aim to provide the Vols with a two-prong rushing attack that takes advantage of Hurd’s power and Kamara’s speed.
“They both know that they need each other,” Tennessee coach Butch Jones told AP. “You can never have enough running backs. I think that has been proven over time. Their relationship — they push each other. They coach each other. They help each other. They respect each other.”
