Some folks might say Will Muschamp was too involved offensively at Florida.
That might explain why the Gators struggled moving the ball and scoring points during his final two seasons there.
Anyway, Auburn’s new defensive coordinator said he “should have been’ more involved in the offense at Florida, which 12th in the SEC in total offense and 13th in offensive plays in 2014.
"I was very involved defensively at Florida and regardless of popular opinion I wasn't as much on offense," he told reporters on Thursday. "Should have been, but I wasn't."
Gus Malzahn hired Muschamp — Auburn's third defensive coordinator in four years — to fix a defense that gave up 31 points or more in its final seven SEC games last season.
Florida allowed 21.1 points a game (seventh in the SEC) and was fifth in total defense.
“A lot of trial and error through those years, and figuring out probably the best ways to get things taught in a timely manner for the players,” he told AL.com. “All I told them is, ‘Listen, effort’s on you right now. The execution’s on us, and eventually you’ve got to learn to execute within the scheme and what we’re trying to do. Just give us effort right now and we’ll coach the rest of it.’ Right now, I’ve been somewhat pleased. Much better Day 2 than Day 1.”
“I’m very comfortable here and Gus has been great and the staff has been outstanding and the players have been very welcoming,” Muschamp said. “Everyone has been wonderful.”
