News of the week: The Panthers gained one commitment, but lost two. The newest recruit is Matlin Marshall, a quarterback from Evans. He also claimed offers from Air Force and Marshall. "I think he could end up on offense, possibly as a receiver," PantherTalk.com's Ben Moore said. Meanwhile, Mays linebacker Charlie Patrick flipped to Troy, while Jaleen Thomas of Dothan, Ala., reneged for undisclosed reasons.
What to feel good about: Mill Creek running back Jonathan Hawkins, who claimed early offers from N.C. State and Auburn, took an official visit last weekend. He's going to Buffalo this week … The Panthers are still flirting with Tyler Cross, a defensive tackle from Chapel Hill High who committed to Syracuse.
What to worry about: Depending how things go, the Panthers could be searching to fill one or two spots on signing day.
