UGA, which has the No. 6 football recruiting class in the nation, will have to collectively hold its breath while some of its top commits visit rival schools this weekend.
Probably the biggest surprise of the weekend was 4-star wide receiver Darius Slayton of Greater Atlanta Christian showing up at Auburn as "surprise visitor," according to multiple reports.
Slayton is still building a relationship with UGA’s new offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer. He took his official visit with the Bulldogs in September, and he committed last month before the coaching changes. Auburn was the runner-up at the time.
Slayton is a critical need for UGA after this past week’s de-commitment of another wide receiver, Van Jefferson.
Some other surprising news was UGA's long commit at running back, Chris Carson, making an official visit to Oklahoma State this weekend. Carson plays at Butler junior college, and is from Parkview High School.
Is Carson worried about playing time at UGA next season with Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and Keith Marshall? Is he visiting Oklahoma State because UGA brought in another RB target (Mark Walton of Miami who is committed to Miami) this week on a visit? Or did Carson just want to have fun and take a visit somewhere?
Another UGA commit, athlete Shaq Wilson of Miami, is visiting West Virginia this weekend and will go to Florida next week. Wilson said he's at least "85-percent committed" to the Bulldogs.
Then there's 5-star athlete Terry Godwin of Callaway High School. He's a longtime commit to UGA but took an official visit to Auburn last weekend and ranked it as a "10."
“It’s a 10 because the Auburn coaches, they are great,” Godwin told the AJC. “I had a good time. It was all about having fun.”
This weekend, Godwin is at Alabama, which is considered to be UGA’s most serious contender. “It’s the same thing with Alabama as it was Auburn … they lost a lot of guys, and they feel like I can come in there and make an impact,” Godwin said.
Godwin said he was invited by former UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo to take an official visit to Colorado State on Jan. 30. But he turned it down.
“It was kind of weird, at first, because he recruited me for Georgia,” Godwin said. “He was just telling that he wanted me to come out for an official and check things out. I decided not go to. I’m not visiting anywhere that weekend.”
Where do things stand between Godwin and UGA? “I’m going to make my final decision on signing day,” he said. “I’m committed to UGA. I’m still 100-percent with Georgia. And I’ll make everything final on signing day.”
