Light showers and cool temperatures still linger in metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

Heavy downpours entered the metro area after the National Weather Service cancelled a severe thunderstorm warning in the area. The rains followed a cold front that entered Atlanta, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Coweta, Douglas, Fayette and Fulton counties that expired about 7:15 p.m. Dawson, Forsyth, Hall, Lumpkin and White counties were also under a warning.

Storms returned about 8 p.m. Tuesday cooling temperatures to 69 degrees in Atlanta. Earlier, the city reached a high of 85.

A drop in temperatures is also in the forecast for later this week, Channel 2 reported.

The high Wednesday is expected to hit only 77 degrees. There is also a 30 percent chance of rain.

“We’ve got temps that are going to feel more like early October than early September by the end of the week,” Channel 2 metrorologist Brian Monahan said.

In addition to a cool streak, metro Atlanta is expected to feel the effects of Hurricane Irma, now a Category 5 storm, early next week.

“And everybody in the southeast needs to pay close attention to this system,” Monahan said.
