Photos: Past hurricanes to hit Texas

On Sunday September 25, 2005 the day after Hurricane Rita in Erath, Louisiana, Jr. Savoy leads a horse that was tramped in a flooded pen.

Carl Melvin attempts to contact his brother in West Virginia from a pay phone in his Beaumont neighborhood. Melvin, who chose to ride out Hurricane Rita in his nearby home, brought his rifle along for personal protection. He said he was a veteran of Desert Storm.

A hand lettered sign placed next to Loop 610 in Houston sums up the feelings of many Houstonians about Hurricane Rita which only brought moderate wind to the Houston area and almost no damage. The sign was painted by Moses Chavez and placed at the edge of his property in the Shephard Forest neighborhood.

Ruben Banks is relieved to beat the traffic rush out of his native Houston, TX. as he and his family evacuated due to Hurricane Rita's path toward the Texas Gulf coast . Banks is seeking shelter at the Delco Center in Austin Wednesday afternoon.

Hurricane Rita evacuees poured into Austin, TX. overnight and into Thursday afternoon filling two shelters and opening another. Hundreds wait in line to register at the LBJ H.S. shelter this morning, many driving long hours overnight to get here like Jose Antonio Gonzalez, 1 1/2 years old, who is a little tired being held by his father Guadalupe Gonzalez. Their family totaling 20 people drove overnight starting at 7pm Wednesday and finally arriving in Austin at 6 am this morning.

After midnight at a Chevron just off of I-10 in Lake Charles Louisiana on Friday September 23, 2005 Albaro Castillo and his three-year-old daughter Maryline Lara pass time in their minivan. They along with other family members try to decide where to go with what little gas they have. The family left Houston in hopes of evacuating to Alabama as Hurricane Rita draws near.

Several horses and other livestock were also among the many fleeing Hurricane Rita and arriving in Austin, TX. Friday afternoon at the Texas Heritage and Exposition Center. Pat Enyart, came to the center on her lunch break to help out with these horses from Galveston Island that were rescued before the storm by volunteer Paul Johnson. These horses are used for beach riding on the island.
