It took almost a week, but I finally saw something gasp-worthy at South by Southwest Interactive.
During the "Virtual Tourism: VR, 360 and the Travel Industry" panel Wednesday, David Klaiber, co-founder and director of Rapid VR, an Australian virtual reality production company based in Sydney, unveiled a sphere that plays 360-degree video.
“The sphere lets people experience virtual reality in a campfire setting,” said Dan White, Rapid VR director of technology.
The sphere could be a powerful new tool in advertising and marketing, White pointed out. If placed in an airport lounge or shopping center, it would “definitely capture attention,” he said.
The idea of a shared and social virtual reality experience is an exciting new innovation, and a far cry from clunky headsets that only fit one.
