Bernard Tomic continued his domination at the BB&T Atlanta Open on Thursday, upsetting fellow Australian Matthew Ebden.
Ebden ousted No. 5-seed Frances Tiafoe in the first round Tuesday.
Another Australian, Alex de Minaur followed suit Thursday, routing American Bradley Klahn in straight sets to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round to face Tomic.
Tomic, 26, advanced behind straight sets with a tiebreak to finish the match at 6-4, 7-6 (3). After losing the first set, Ebden, 31, rallied to lead much of the second. Tomic trailed close behind, eventually sending the set to a tiebreak.
Tomic is ranked six places behind Ebden in world rankings, but upset the No.-100 ranked Ebden to advance to the quarterfinals.
No. 3-seed de Minaur, 20, defeated Klahn, 28, 6-4, 6-4 to earn his first Atlanta quarterfinals appearance. De Minaur opened the match with back-to-back wins and traded games with the 28-year-old American for the rest of the first set before winning. Klahn took an early one-game lead in the second set, but was outplayed again.
In the doubles quarterfinals, Radu Albot and Artem Sitak, the fourth-seeded team, routed Marcelo Arevalo and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela 6-4, 6-3. Albot and Sitak will face the winner of Friday’s match between Bob and Mike Bryan and Jonathan Erlich and Divij Sharan in the semis.
Americans Jack Sock and Jackson Withrow eliminated Ben McLachlan and John-Patrick Smith 6-2, 6-3 to secure a spot in the semis. They will face the team of Dominic Inglot and Austin Krajicek.
On Thursday night, Georgia Tech alumnus Kevin King will play American Taylor Fritz, and Ugo Humbert will face Miomir Kecmanovic for the last two open matches in the quarterfinals.
