Kirby Smart eager to give Justin Fields more playing time

Georgia coach Kirby Smart wants to get freshman quarterback Justin Fields into Saturday’s game against Middle Tennessee.

Fields, who has played briefly in both of the Bulldogs games this season, was the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2018 signing class.

“I think an important thing for Justin is he continues to improve. He’s worked hard and we want him to go ahead and continue to improve as a player and that’s what’s going to make our team better is support the future of the team and would love to give him an opportunity to get into this game.”

Fields, from Kennesaw, went 7-of-8 for 63 passing yards and one touchdown in the Bulldogs’ season opener rout against Austin Peay. He had just one pass for 8 yards in Georgia’s win Saturday at South Carolina.

Georgia returns to Sanford Stadium to play Middle Tennessee at 7:15 p.m. Saturday.
