Atlanta’s biggest July 4th party, the AJC Peachtree Road Race, opens for registration Saturday and remains open eight days.

There’s no longer any need to wait up late for the opening of registration to try to get one of the 60,000 coveted numbers. Under that first-come, first-served system, the event filled up faster each year. In 2010, online registration slots were filled in just over four and a half hours.

We switched to a lottery system in 2011 to establish a fair and less frantic way to get in the race, and it helps eliminate errors and delays caused by high volume traffic or potential crashes to the registration site.

For those wishing to participate in the AJC Peachtree Road Race with family and friends, the online lottery will allow up to 10 people to enter as a "Group." During the selection process, if a "Group" is selected, everyone in the group will receive entry, though members may be placed in different starting times. You can find frequently asked questions and other information at www.peachtreeroadrace.org.

To register in the lottery, go to www.ajc.com/peachtree. Fill out the registration form and provide credit card information. Your card will not be charged unless your entry is selected. Enter the lottery only once, as those entering multiple times will have their entries tossed. The lottery registration closes open at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.
