If it happens, signing Kenwyne Jones would be Atlanta United's first truly high-profile signing.

Here are a few facts about Jones:

  • Jones has played for four Premier League clubs, as well as two clubs that were in lower levels when he was there. The PL teams were: Sunderland, Stoke City, Cardiff City and Bournemouth. He also played for Southampton and Stoke City before they achieved promotion, and Sheffield Wednesday.
  • In all, Jones scored 86 goals while in England.
  • He is without a team after Cardiff declined to pick up his option.
  • It is somewhat concerning that Jones has led a mercenary existence while in England. Not counting loans, he played for four teams in 12 years. Counting loans, he played for six clubs (Stoke City twice). It could simply be that teams valued his skills, it could be his wages were too much, it could be a few injuries that picked up during his career. Whatever the reasons, it bears watching because Atlanta United needs to be spot-on with its higher-profile signings.
  • Transfer fees for Jones totaled more than 14 million pounds.
  • He is captain of Trinidad and Tobago, for which he has made 81 appearances and scored 23 goals.
  • His twitter handle is @kenwynjonestt.
  • He is tall, measuring 6-foot-2.
  • He is 31 years old, not bad for a striker.
  • He has been linked with other MLS clubs in the past, including Columbus and Dallas.
