NCAA: Alabama must vacate wins for scandal
Alabama will vacate football wins from 2005 through 2007, the NCAA announced Thursday as it put the Crimson Tide on three years' probation, but the program will not lose any scholarships.
The Division I Committee on Infractions cited Alabama for major violations involving 16 sports. The case centered on athletes who improperly obtained free textbooks for other students.
Twenty-two athletes, including seven football players, were identified as "intentional wrongdoers" who were aware they were receiving improper benefits.
As a result, Alabama must vacate any football victory in which any of those seven competed. Alabama also will forfeit accomplishments in men's tennis, men's track and women's track.
The NCAA fined Alabama $43,900, or twice the amount of the "benefits" that were wrongly obtained.
