The streak is on hold.
Kyle Korver did not travel with the Hawks for Wednesday’s game at the Rockets because of a rib contusion. The guard remained in Atlanta for treatment after he suffered the injury in Tuesday’s loss to the Magic. Korver, who will be listed as day-to-day by the team, said he doesn’t expect to miss significant time.
With 88 consecutive regular-season games with a 3-pointer, Korver needs one in his next game played to tie the NBA’s all-time record. Dana Barros holds the mark of 89. Korver could have matched the mark Wednesday and broken it Friday at home against the Mavericks.
The streak will not end with the missed game. Last season, amid the streak, Korver missed eight games because of a back injury and the birth of his child. Korver has started all 15 games this season at shooting guard. He ranks fourth on the team with an 11.7 points per game average.
Korver played 31 minutes against the Magic on Tuesday. He finished with three points — the 3-pointer to continue the streak. He was 1-of-6 shooting for the game, all from behind the arc, and had three assists and two rebounds.
Cartier Martin, who is from Houston, started in place of Korver.
“He’s had more opportunities and more reps and I think there is more of a comfort level,” Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said on the decision to start Martin. “Defensively, he gives us a little bigger body, a little bigger presence.”
The Hawks were also were without guards Shelvin Mack and Lou Williams against the Rockets. Both also did not make in the trip because of injury treatment.
Mack suffered a left ankle sprain in the second quarter against the Magic and was unable to return. Williams does not initially play in back-to-back games as he returns from a torn right ACL. The Hawks have another back-to-back set Friday and Saturday and then only one in December. Coach Mike Budenholzer said he expects the restriction on Williams to be lifted by the games Dec. 13-14.
Without Mack and Williams, the Hawks were down to two true point guards in starter Jeff Teague and rookie Dennis Schroder. John Jenkins was the only other guard available. Schroder played five minutes against the Magic after the game was out of hand. He had not appeared in four of the previous five games as Mack assumed the primary backup point guard duties.
“It’s opportunity for other guys,” Budenholzer said. “John Jenkins will get opportunities. Dennis will get opportunities. We feel good about them. They’ve been preparing and working and I’m sure they are ready to go.”
The Hawks have no immediate plans to recall guard Jared Cunningham from the NBA Development League. Cunningham remains on assignment with the Bakersfield (Calif.) Jam.
