Football players aren't supposed to cry -- apparently that's the job of their parents.
The father of a player on the Western Hills Cougars has filed a formal accusation of bullying against the coach of Aledo High School after the Bearcats trounced the Cougars 91-0 last Friday, the Associated Press reports. The two schools are located in Fort Worth. Texas.
The bullying complaint, which must be investigated under state law, says Aledo coach Tim Buchanan should have done more to hold the score down.
Buchanan, however, noted that he benched his starters after only 21 plays, used a conservative run-based game plan and allowed the clock to run uninterrupted after halftime, according to the AP.
"It wasn't good for anybody," Buchanan said. "I've sat and gone over and over and over it on what we could have done differently. The score could have very easily been 150 to nothing." There is no mercy rule for 11-man football in Texas, though coaches can agree to end a game early. Buchanan told the AP he wasn't aware of that option.
Western Hills coach John Naylor told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he disagreed with the bullying allegation. Under state law, Aledo's principal must investigate the complaint and prepare a report. Aledo Principal Dan Peterson said his report on the bullying complaint should be completed this week.
