Newnan's Ogletree Brothers: Meet Dad

A look at Newnan High football brothers Alec and Zander Ogletree and their father, Al: Nov. 2009.

Al Ogletree is a 28-year veteran truck driver by trade but still is able to make every football game of his sons' on Friday nights.

Al (in white cap) helps his sons Alec and Alexander learn from the mistakes he made as a high school football player at Newnan. Al, a 1977 Newnan graduate, got into trouble with the Newnan principal because he made bad decisions and was unable to finish his own promising football career as a running back and linebacker.

Al has called his twin sons "Double Trouble" since before they were born. When Al and wife Allyson went to the doctor to look at the sonogram to find our their baby's sex, their doctor said he has good news and bad news. The good news was "you're having twins." Then the doctor put his arm around Al and said, "You're having twins, you'll have double trouble."

Alec earned the nickname of "Stun Gun" when he first put on pads at 9-years-old in youth football. He would give opponent offensive players strong hits that he would stun them after a hit. "This was an instinct Alec had," Al says, "to make the kinds of hits on kids that would put them on stretchers."

Al calls Alexander (33) "Big Swole." Zander was nicknamed Big Swole because, Al says, "He gets swole up mad during his football games. Zander's so emotional and when the game gets intense Zander feeds off of that emotion, getting mad in the process."

Dad sports a personalized Newnan hat that he had autographed by Georgia head coach Mark Richt during a visit with his sons Alec and Alexander to UGA earlier this year.

"It's very rewarding to see them (Alec and Alexander) do well," Al Ogletree says of his sons' high school football careers as he chats with friends in the Newnan stands. "I'm proud of them where they're at. I didn't do mine the right way. I couldn't be more happy to be their dad."

And twin brother Alec celebrates Newnan's 43-26 win over rival East Coweta to cap off the Cougars' second straight undefeated season.

Through the years, the question Al would get the most from other parents would be, Which one is better than the other? Al says, "Both are good in their own way. No way they're better than each other in our eyes."

When things go bad they know how to handle things."
