St. Francis’ boys of Class A are the only new No. 1-ranked basketball team entering the state tournament, which begins Friday. The other 11 top-ranked teams won their region tournaments.
St. Francis won Region 6, generally considered the toughest region in Class A. North Cobb Christian, the 6-A runner-up to St. Francis, is ranked second. Whitefield Academy, the previous No. 1-ranked team, is No. 3. North Cobb Christian beat Whitefield Academy in the semifinals. The Class A state tournament begins next week.
The only ranked team from last week that failed to make the state tournament was South Atlanta. The Hornets, who have a victory this season against No. 1-ranked Columbia, lost in the 6-AAAA quarterfinals to Stone Mountain and were eliminated.
South Atlanta was among 15 teams that dropped out of the Top 10 after losses in the region tournament.
